Rachael and I usually go over to the elementary school playground to play because it’s closer, but today we went down the hill to the ‘big park.’ Even though it was a weekday, this place was packed. We went from slide to slide, then over to the swings. She always swings on her belly, so I asked her why. She said she can’t go as high if she sits on her butt. I told her I would give her a push if she needed it. She said okay but as soon as I stopped pushing she stopped swinging. I realized that she wasn’t pumping. I showed her how and when to pump her legs and at first she just wanted to go back to her belly, but before long she was swinging and pumping and going higher than she had ever gone on her own.We decided to give someone else a turn on the swings and made our way over to the fireman’s pole. She climbed up the stairs and came down the slide. I said,” Why didn’t you come down the pole?” She said she would get hurt. I asked her what made her think so. She said,” That lady over there told that boy not to go down cause he would get hurt.” I pointed out the other kids that were going down the pole and not getting hurt and told her I would catch her the first time or two. She climbed up the stairs and stood opposite the pole. I told her to grab the pole first then wrap her legs around and just don’t let go. I grabbed her butt as she came flying down the pole. When she hit the ground she started to cry. She said it hurt her hands. I showed her how to put one hand after the other and told her to try again. This time she came down a little slower but with no pain. We were so proud. She couldn’t wait to do it again. In fact she did it so many times her legs were getting tired from climbing the steps, so we walked over to a nearby picnic table to take a rest. As she was playing a game on my iphone I watch ‘that lady over there’ tell ‘that boy’ over and over, “Don’t do this, don’t do that. You’re gonna get hurt.” How sad is that? I could just imagine this poor child growing up afraid to do anything because he might get hurt.It’s true, he might get hurt. Rachael got hurt too, but with a little instruction and a lot of encouragement she is now able to do things that she was not able to do yesterday. I told her how proud of her I was and I thanked her for trusting me and trying again even though it hurt. She looked up and said,” I’m proud of you too for showing me how.” We just sat there a few more minutes, out glowing the sun with pride.

Lighter fluid is a chemical compound that was designed to start fires and aid in their sustainability. Butane is the most common form of the fluid and it can be found in outdoor grill mechanisms, torches, and most recognizably in cigarette lighters. Refillable Zippo lighters require lighter fluid to operate. This chemical is highly flammable and should always be handled with extreme caution.

It has slowly developed into a helpful resource within the home. Over time, many uses have been uncovered, aside from starting fires or lighting cigarettes. Cleaning various stains and surfaces has become easier using this chemical. For instance, stubborn black marks left behind on the kitchen floor from shoes can be removed by using a squirt of lighter fluid and a paper towel. Drawings on walls can also be eliminated. Ink, marker and crayon designs can be erased by placing a small amount of fluid onto a clean cloth and wiping away.

Nothing is more difficult to eliminate than chewing gum from surfaces and even hair. It can be put directly onto the wad of gum and after a few minutes the gum will dissolve. Then a towel can wipe away the remnants or a comb can remove softened gum from the hair. Removing stickers, tape, and sticky residue can also become an easier process by using this. Squirt a few drops onto the sticker, let soak, and then wipe away. Lighter fluid dries instantly, leaving no wet or oily spot on doors or furniture. Stainless steel items will also benefit from the cleaning effects of this chemical. Rust spots can be rubbed off stainless by wiping with fluid on a clean cloth. Then finish up by using another cloth to rub off the streaks left behind.

Pesky cooking oil stains that are left on clothing even after washing can seem hopeless to remove. However, once again, lighter fluid can be a lifesaver. Pouring a small bit of fluid directly onto the stained areas then rewashing will remove the spots. It is imperative to use a very small amount, as it is not recommended to place flammable liquids in a washing machine.

Obviously, more traditional uses for this product are those involving fire. Refilling lighters for cigarette and pipe smoking is the one of the most common of these. Using lighter fluid to light charcoal has always been a popular use for the compound, but modern times have seen this process decline. With the increased use of self lighting charcoal, the addition of fluid is not necessary.

No matter what the intended use of lighter fluid, it must be handled properly. It is a hazardous, flammable material that is incredible dangerous when swallowed, even fatal. It is vital to know and follow the proper precautions when handling and seek medical attention immediately in the event of an accident.

The origin of this article comes from a short blurb in the December 17, 2010 issue of The Week magazine. The latest survey of student school achievement, which is done every three years by the Organization For Economic Cooperation and Development, found that students in Shanghai ranked first in the world in reading, science, and math. Quite a feat, to be number one in all three. The survey measured the education proficiency of fifteen year olds in 60 countries around the world.

The very bad and sad news is that the United States ranked 17th in reading, 23rd in science, and 31th in math. While the article did not give education expenditure information, it is a good bet that the United States ranked much higher in amount of education dollars spent per student than it did in any of the three categories measured. If this assertion is correct, then we are spending a lot of taxpayer money and getting mediocre performance in return.

Which brings us to the Federal Education Department, a bureaucracy that has been around since 1980 and according to its government website, has a discretionary budget of about .7 billion (this does not include the billion or so of Pell grants that it administers). I guess one could make the argument that without the Education Department, the United States would have finished worse than 17th, 23rd, and 31th.

However, it is likely we could have finished this poorly without spending the .7 billion a year. In fact, if you look at the Education Department website, it acknowledges that “it is important to point out that education in America is a state and local responsibility.”  They admit that they are not the main driver of education in this country but still eat up almost billion a year just to fill a supplemental role.

Let’s do some fantasy math. What if we terminated the Education Department, what could we do with that money:

Since there are 50 states, you could provide an annual supplemental payment to the states, that the Department fully acknowledges has the main responsibility for educating our kids, of billion per state to help improve their facilities and education processes.
According to the government’s National Center For Education Statistics, there are 93,295 public elementary and secondary schools in this country. If we divide this number of schools into the Education Department’s budget, each school could theoretically receive an additional 2,000 per school each year to help educate America’s youth.
If we purchased the basic iPad product at Best Buys’ current price of 9.95, we could outfit over 99 million students in one year with an iPad for themselves. Given today’s high tech world, wouldn’t iPads (or other worthy technology) be better use of taxpayer funds than a 31st finish in math?
Of course, just having a piece of technology is not going to improve an education process but imagine what could happen in education with an iPad. For example, the need for books and the high expense that goes with the school purchase of books could be diverted to hire more teachers, improve school curriculums, enhance teacher training, etc. since bound paper books are more expensive than electronic digital books, a format that that could also be much easily updated. And this is for only one year. With the technology already purchased in year one, next year, billions of more dollars could be spent on other education needs, if we eliminated the Education Department budget.
If you are not into helping improve our schools, you could divide the .7 billion by the number of U.S. households and give each household an annual check of just over 0. Certainly a better idea than 31st  in math.

The point to be made by these math calculations is that the Education Department has done such a poor job of positioning our kids for success in the world that continuing to budget and pay for this non-performance is a farce. How much worse could it be to take the billion or so and try something new with it? Given that the Department is supplemental, what is the worst that could happen? We fall to 32nd in math? The schools and education approach in Shanghai is getting results, why can’t we get the Federal government out of the way and let the states find a way to mimic what Shanghai is obviously doing right and our Education Department is obviously not doing at all?

While reading about our poor performance as a nation academically, it appears that another Federal agency, the Department of Energy, is also a total failure when it comes to its charter. Although it has been over 30 years since the traumatic energy crises of the 1970s, we as a nation are not closer to having a strategic, workable, and rationale national energy plan today than we were when the Department of Energy was formed decades ago.

Think about it: name one success story from the Department of Energy that you can come up with without doing some serious research? We still have no national energy policy. I can think of no significant project, program, or technology that the Department funded with our taxpayer money that has born fruit, either with cheaper energy, better energy, or less reliance on foreign energy sources.

If you look at their Federal website,you see that the Department Of Energy’s annual budget is around billion, of which just over billion of that is for Defense Department research. If you took that billion and moved it and its staff into the Defense Department, you could dump the remaining parts of the Department Of Energy and save the taxpayers just over billion a year. This would provide an annual tax reduction of about 0 for every U.S. household. What would you rather have: 0 in your pocket or just another government bureaucracy that did  nothing it was supposed to do?

These are the types of questions that need to be asked as the country faces this extraordinary and looming budget crisis of skyrocketing national debt. Just because we always had a government program, does not mean we need to continue to have these programs. An Education  Department that fails at education and a Department of Energy that fails at energy are not good reasons to continue to have them. Better to try somethng different and less expensive. Again, how much worse could it get when it comes to these two monstrosities? 

Just because something exists today does not mean it has to exist tomorrow. Lehman Brothers, Bear Sterns, Montgomery Ward, Service Merchandise, American Motors, Studebaker, GTE, ITT, the Iron Curtain, the Soviet Union, etc. all existed and are now all gone. Given this historical perspective, getting rid of a mere Cabinet Department or two should be no big deal, especially the ones that are expensive and ineffective, the cause for the demise of these past giants in their respective fields.

The Jacksonville Jaguars history is relatively short considering they began as an NFL expansion team in 1995. They play in Jacksonville, Florida, and joined the Central Division of the AFC at the same time as the Carolina Panthers. In 2002, the NFL realigned divisions and the Jaguars became a part of the AFC South Division of the NFL. Jacksonville is known as a great place for football, boasting college and pro games, celebrating big games with parties and parades. A look back in Jacksonville history documents them hosting the 1967 and 1968 All Star Game of the AFL. They had attempted over the years to acquire a team, first chasing after the Baltimore Colts with no avail, and then setting their sights on the Houston Oilers. They even created a “Jacksonville Oilers” banner and designated an area of the stadium as non-alcoholic and family oriented to try to win this team over in the late 80s. However, they remained without a team of their own for quite a few more years.

Since the NFL hadn’t had an expansion team since 1976, they decided in the early 1990s to add two more teams. The goal was to have them ready for the 1993 season, and the city choices were to be made from Charlotte, St. Louis, Baltimore, Memphis, and Jacksonville. Many individuals were surprised that Jacksonville and Charlotte were chosen, hence the Jacksonville Jaguars and Carolina Panthers were born. So Jacksonville Jaguars history began in Southern Florida. Considering Florida already had two NFL teams with the Miami Dolphins and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, it wasn’t expected that Jacksonville would get the team. Also, the markets were ranked very low, and the fan base was questionable because of the large focus on college sports in the area. Nonetheless, they were elected to own the franchise.

The Gator Bowl stadium was built during the Great Depression, which hosted occasional NFL exhibition games, as well as the short-lived World Football League and United States Football League. It was old and had attempted to make adequate construction additions over the years, although it was still unusable for NFL franchise. Therefore, it was demolished in 1993, and a brand new stadium was built. For cost savings, they were able to spare the west upper deck and a portion of the ramping system from demolition and deemed usable in the new structure. Hence, Jacksonville Municipal Stadium had arrived. For a ten year stint, it was known as Alltel Stadium, but then reverted back to being called the Jacksonville Municipal Stadium.

In 1995, Jacksonville Jaguars history began, ending with a record of 4-12 for the year. That season set the stage for many key players, including the likes of Mark Brunell, James Stewart and Jimmy Smith. The team improved their second year, winning six of their seven final games, allowing them to finish with a winning record of 9-7. A significant event in Jacksonville Jaguars history is when they won a spot in the AFC playoffs, beating both the Buffalo Bills and the Denver Broncos, two teams that had easily dominated the AFC that season. The Jaguars successes, increased demand for Jacksonville Jaguars memorabilia and event tickets dramatically. They performed well in the championship game, even though they had recorded a loss to the New England Patriots. Jaguars made the playoffs again in 1997, losing the first round game. This kept on for quite some time, each year with a winning record and a trip to the playoffs, until 2000, when the Jacksonville Jaguars team took a turn for the worse.

Some of the disappointments in Jacksonville Jaguars history involved salary cap problems and other issues plagued the team in 2000-2003. Jaguars were not able to afford to keep a lot of talent on their roster; losing key players affected their chances to win. When 2002 arrived, the NFL saw fit to divide up the teams further, which brought the Jacksonville Jaguars to the AFC South from the AFC central. Jacksonville Jaguar experienced challenges and struggles, many don’t realize that they have had their share of successes. Since their inception they have had six playoff appearances and two division championships to their credit.
